As many people know, I have an insane sweet tooth. Don’t worry I gained my COVID 19 so I could give you feedback on NYC’s best chocolate chip cookies. I would easily choose eating dessert over actual dinner any day of the week. Since moving to New York it has been my mission to try as many dessert spots as possible but I like to focus on the basics, chocolate chip cookies. I make my own chocolate chip cookies as well as I love to bake so I will let you in for a few tips and tricks!

Review for Bang Cookies: We have tried the following flavors: Sea salt chocolate chunk, S’mores, Kitchen Sink. All of the flavors are absolutely delicious. Definitely my favorite cookie! The cookies are very fresh and the three times we have gotten the cookies they are still warm from being baked. We were able to keep the cookies in an air tight container and they were soft for 4 days (possibly even longer if we didn’t eat them). The cookies themselves are very chewy but slightly crisp on the outside and you can tell the company puts a lot of thought into the ingredients. The cookies are quite large in size and have the correct ratio of dough to chocolate chunks. I can eat about one quarter to half the cookie if I really try. When I get home I typically microwave the cookie or put it in the oven to heat it up. The only negative thing I have to say is that the employees are not the most friendly, they are somewhat dismissive. Personally, I can overlook this for a great cookie.

Review for Levain Cookies: Levain cookies is located in NYC and is currently the most beloved cookie by tourists and local New Yorkers so expect long lines most days. Levain has 4 classic flavors, Chocolate Chip Walnut, Dark Chocolate Chocolate Chip, Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip and Oatmeal Raisin. The cookie lives up to the hype as every cookie is 6 oz in size, so you can easily share with a friend. Levain cookies are very dense with a gooey inside and crisp outside. When you initially bite into the cookie it doesn’t feel as though it is going to be soft, but as you get closer to the center it does trick you with how soft the cookie is. Make sure to have a drink handy as you will feel very thirsty eating these cookies. Levain cookies per the website have a shelf life of up to 7 days in an airtight container. Levain is a must try if you are traveling to New York, but I would say if the line is greater than 30 minutes, it isn’t worth it.

Review for Chip NYC: Chip cookies rotates in 30 flavors over the course of a year. Every day, four different flavors are featured in the store. Each cookie is 5.25 ounces so definitely sharable like the two options above. I have personally tried the chocolate chip, funfetti, S’mores, and triple chocolate. The chocolate chip cookie is very soft with small chocolate chips. I personally prefer chocolate chunks or a bigger chip size. The cookie to me has a slight cake-like consistency with a flour taste. I find that their cookies are not the most consistent in taste from a week to week basis. One day, their chocolate chip cookies taste better than Levain and other days it tastes like a basic chocolate chip cookie.

Homemade Chocolate Chip Cookies

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 cup or 2 sticks of butter

3/4 cup granulated sugar

3/4 cup packaged brown sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 large eggs

1 package (12 ounces) milk chocolate chips

This is the Nestle Tollhouse Chocolate Chip cookie recipes, but the secret is how you prepare the ingredients.

  1. Preheat oven to 360 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Combine flour, baking soda, salt, and baking powder in a small bowl.
  3. When softening the butter, make sure it is soft to the touch and doesn’t melt. This will lead to flat cookies. I soften the butter in 10 second intervals in the microwave.
  4. With the mixer, beat the butter alone for 2 minutes. Then add in the granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla. Mix until mixture is creamy.
  5. Add eggs one at a time, beating after each addition. Do not over-beat the eggs. Gradually add in the flour mixture. Do not over mix the dough.
  6. Once ingredients combined, fold in your chocolate chips.
  7. Use a non-stick tray or spray with cooking spray. Make sure to wipe off residual cooking spray between batches so the cookies don’t taste burnt.
  8. Use an ice cream scooper or a large spoon and place the dough on the tray. It doesn’t need to be perfectly round or formed into a ball. It’s best to not let the dough melt in your hands. I prefer a larger amount of dough per cookie, hence the ice cream scooper so the cook time will vary.
  9. Bake for approximately 11-12 minutes or until the bottom and top start to look tan in color. Even if you think they are slightly undercooked, just let them rest on a cooling rack to get a gooey texture.
