How to Make Charm Necklace

Charm necklaces are finally back! I have slowly been seeing people make their own necklaces and they look absolutely amazing at a fraction of price buying complete necklaces. When you make your own necklace you can truly customize what charms you want as well as the quality of the necklace. If you don’t think you will wear your necklace often you can get the charms for a steal! You only need a couple of items to create your own necklace: jewelry pliers, charms, jump rings, and a ready made necklace to add your charms.

Step By Step Instructions

  • Use a pair of jewelry pliers to grip either side of the jump ring and open the jump ring by twisting it open away from you. If you just pull it open it will not close properly.
  • Attach the loop of your chosen charm.
  • Attach the necklace.
  • Use your pliers to then twist the jump ring back towards you to close, letting the ends of the jump ring slide next to each other. To get a really secure fit, twist the ring slightly past the closed position and then back again letting the natural spring of the metal align the ends to a tight, closed position.

Charm Necklace: Charms at All Price Points

Etsy is a great place for all of your charm necklace needs. There are a couple of shops that I recently ordered from to see the quality of the charms since the price point was so low. I personally did not want to spend > $20 on a charm and most were less than $5.

Charm Necklace: Choose a Necklace

There are so many different styles of necklaces you can attach charms to! You can either attach the charms around the necklace or do a more clustered approach with a carabiner. You can also get a thicker gold chain with larger jump rings or a dainty necklace, the sky is the limit! When designing your necklace also look in your collection to see if there are any existing necklaces you can add charms to.

Charm Necklaces: Buy One Already Made

Although this is the pricier version, some brands have amazing necklaces. There are also some places on Etsy that allow you to customize as well.
